The Lily model 3208 was designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen and introduced in 1970 as the armchair version. The original armless Lily had been launched the previous year. The chair was developed as part of Jacobsen's total design for the National Bank of Denmark, where both versions have been in use since 1971.
The Lily was the final shell chair Jacobsen designed before his death in 1971. Its wide back, narrow waist and sweeping armrests pushed Fritz Hansen's manufacturing process to its limits. A significant number of shells had to be rejected during production, and the model was discontinued in the late 1970s before being relaunched by Fritz Hansen years later.
